28 1941.0406.00000111941.0406.0000011 1831 LADY OF THE LAKE (STEAMBOAT: 1830-1833) NORFOLK; VIRGINIA; UNITED STATES BOSTON - MASSACHUSETTS - UNITED STATES - Lithographer; NORFOLK - VIRGINIA - UNITED STATES - Publisher SHORT DESCRIPTION: Hand-colored lithograph titled 'Lake Drummond Hotel, The Gretna Green of Lower Virginia, and part of the Dismal Swamp Canal.' Lithograph from Pendleton's Lithography company in Boston from a sketch by Thomas Williamson. Published by C. Hall in Norfolk. The image shows a view looking towards the Lake Drummond Hotel from the opposite bank of the Dismal Swamp Canal. At the left, a dirt road runs along the canal. In the lower left corner are stacks of lumber and logs. Several men sit on the lumber looking across the canal with two dogs at their feet. One has a gun or cane resting on his right shoulder. Another man stands at the corner of the stack of lumber near a small row boat that has been dragged up on to the bank of the canal, board lays at the boat's side. Four boats, three sailing and one steamboat, can be seen in the canal. At the right, closest to the viewer, is a two-masted gaff-rigged cutter with two men at the stern, one holding the tiller. There are large bags or bundles in the well at the center of the boat suggesting the boat is hauling cargo. The boat has a triangular blue flag flying on the main mast. At the center is steamboat Lady of the Lake. It is crowded with passengers under a canopy. It has two smoke stacks and flies an American flag with a circle of stars around a large star in the canton. Beyond the the steamboat, center left, is another two-masted gaff-rigged sailboat with a triangular blue flag on its main mast. In the extreme distance, sailing towards the other three vessels, is another small sailboat. On the opposite side of the canal is another dirt road along which many people are walking. Several stand in front of the plank fence that surrounds the Lake Drummond Hotel. The hotel appears to be a one-story building with columns along a long porch. At the center of the building is a small second floor area with five windows and a chimney. There are several smaller buildings behind the hotel. At the extreme right in the lower right corner are stacks of lumber. Another building sits behind the third boat sailing up the canal. Trees surrounding the scene suggest the area is wooded beyond the clearing where the buildings have been constructed. NOTES: Photocopy in file of a painting by Robert Salmon (1804-1865) "Dismal Swamp Canal with Lake Drummond Hotel, Oil on wood, 10 x 14 3/16 in., signed, dated, and inscribed (on back) No. 650 / Painted by R Salmon / 1830. Recorded in the artist's account book. Noted in Salmon's account book that he lent the painting to [William] Pendleton for lithograph." William Pendleton directed the leading lithography shop in Boston. Salmon sold him several pictures for lithography between 1830 and 1834. In the note written by Harold S Sniffen, it is noted that the original of this painting is owned by Eugene Sydnor, Richmond, VA. Illustrated in catalogue by Hirschl & Adler Galleries Inc. N.Y.C. Dec. 5. 1972-Jan 6, 1973. "Faces and Places- Changing Images of 19th Century America" (Original of the catalog page is glued into MM Lib book: ND 497 S27 W5 John Wilmerding's "Robert Salmon Painter of Ship and Shore". The piece is virtually identical to this print even though on the image it cites "from a sketch by Thomas Williamson. Esq." and does not recognize Salmon. Research shows a Thomas Williamson, Esq., born in Henrico, Virginia in 1777. After his first wife died Williamson married Anne Walke at her family's home, The Ferry, in Lynnhave, Princess Anne County, Virginia. He moved to Norfolk prior to the 1820 census. He was a cashier of the Virginia Bank of Norfolk and was mayor of Norfolk in 1829 [American Beacon and Norfolk and Portsmouth Daily Advertiser, Volume 61, Number 115, 15 December 1845]. He died in December 1846 in Norfolk, Virginia. [Families of Lower Norfolk and Princess Anne Counties, 1897 NOTES: Research has almost positively identified the steamboat depicted in the print as the LADY OF THE LAKE, a 60 ton, stern paddlewheel boat built at Norfolk in 1830 and abandoned in 1833. Niles Register, 15 May 1830, p. 218, states: "A steamboat is prepareing at Norfolk for navigating the Dismal Swamp Canal. The paddles are fixed at her stern. She is called the Lady of the Lake." The April 30, 1830 issue of The Norfolk and Portsmouth Herald carried the following item: "CANAL VIEWS" The Messrs. Pendleton, of Boston, we learn, are engaged in executing a lithographic view of the Dismal Swamp Canal for Mr. C. Hall, of this place, who is the publisher, from a drawing taken on the spot, by Thomas Williamson, Esq. of this Borough. The print will exhibit a near view of the Lake Drummond Hotel, (the Half-way House,) a handsome building on the East side, with a mile of the Canal, (on which are to be seen a steam boat, a transportation boat, and a sloop,) forming a striking and pleasing perspective, filled out with the wild and unique scenery of the "Great Dismal." The print is contracted to be done in the best style of the celebrated artists who have it in hand; the size about 14 by 16 inches, and delivered to subscribers at a very low price of 50 cents a copy. It will be finished in two or three weeks." NOTES: Starting as early as the 1720s, entrepreneurs considered a canal system through the Dismal Swamp. Eventually, Tidewater Virginia was linked with North Carolina. In the mid-1800s, engineers operated steam dredges, and labor gang foremen oversaw black laborers in the extension of the canals. White stonemasons built supporting structures. These ventures allowed shingles, staves, cotton, naval stores, turpentine, and produce to flow from North Carolina up the Elizabeth River to local and international markets.
